In 2017, the Alberta Native Bee Council launched a citizen science program to monitor bumble bee nest boxes, similar to birdhouses. While colonization rates vary, about 25% of boxes in Alberta are occupied, with urban areas showing higher success.
Participants can build their own bumble bee boxes using the council’s instructions and place them in suitable outdoor locations such as yards, balconies, or natural spaces. Boxes can be positioned on the ground, attached to trees or posts, or buried with a surface connection. Deciduous trees, like poplars, are preferred over conifers for placement.
Each year, participants are encouraged to report on their box’s occupancy, location, and other factors. This valuable data helps improve understanding of bumble bee nesting habits and contributes to important monitoring efforts, all while giving participants an opportunity to engage in meaningful citizen science.
