Mission Monarch is a community science program that invites the public to help protect the endangered monarch butterfly by collecting essential data on its breeding habitat. Participants are asked to search for milkweed plants—vital to monarch survival—identify the species, and record observations of monarch eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and adults. Observations can take place in gardens, parks, fields, or any site where milkweed grows. Data such as location, date, site size, and milkweed abundance are recorded and submitted online at www.mission-monarch.org .
Each observation contributes to a Canada-wide habitat map, supporting scientific research on monarch populations and helping inform conservation strategies. The project is open to all—whether you’re an individual, family, teacher, or community group. Simply find milkweed, look for monarchs, take photos, and submit your results. By participating, you’ll be playing a direct role in protecting one of North America’s most iconic butterflies.
